You're Messed Up!
You're addicted! You're messed up!
Read the following articles (don't forget to read some of the commentary after the articles). They all talk about the effects on teens from social networking, texting etc - all of this "new" technology.
What are the dangers? We're not talking about why the internet itself is dangerous - not talking about predators. We're talking about quality of life - your time; how social networking makes you feel about the world, and how it conditions you to behave. "Real life" vs. "online life".
Your first post should be about what the negative effects of your online life might be. How might things like social networking (Facebook, Twitter) affect you in a negative way. This is a difficult question, because you probably don't think that these things really are affecting you negatively. You can handle it, right?
THEN, after a day or two, in your response to a fellow student's post, argue in FAVOR of social networking - how does it 'enhance' your life - how does it make your life better?
This is a 'deep topic'. One sentence answers are NOT going to cut it, so really think about your answers, and argue your point.

Don't Blame Social Media if Your Teen Is Unsocial, It's Your Fault

The negative effects of my online life is how social media makes me very lazy. Being on social media makes me not do things even not want to do things that I should be doing instead. Social media also can make me very tired and not want to be active.
ReplyDeleteyes i agree with you, social media makes me just wanna sit on my phone all day and watch videos or talk to my friends on snapchat or i just always wanna go on instagram. then when someone wants to do something and im on the couch or in my bed watching netflix or occupied on my phone i sometimes don't even go and do anything :/
DeleteI agree. Social media makes me want to sit on my phone instead of doing homework or going outside. I could be reading a book but instead i go on facebook or snapchat.
DeleteI agree all I do is sit their watching youtube videos but its a win-win for me because I want to get fat.
DeleteOnline life can be influential to how we see the world and ourselves. We've ended up turning some major problems into jokes, or we just flat out ignore things that might actually affect us. While it's true we joke around, we also panic too much sometimes. Fear, paranoia, curfews, rules, and precautions have kept some of us from going out and doing things with our friends and have led us to resorting to hanging out over the phone. While on the phone, we are able to learn more about the world than ever before but it might lead to more paranoia about our safety or body image. I agree in thinking that I'm held back by the rules that have been put in place to protect us. My parents could roam around with their friends as long as they came back safe by sundown, but it's harder now thanks to fear of predators and even vehicles
ReplyDeleteSure, technology is a great thing but it can also be very addicting, harsh on the mind, and body too. Too much use of technology can lead to eye strain, weight gain, and making people become antisocial. These are just some of the negative effects of technology.
ReplyDeleteBeing active on too many social media sites can lead to strangers getting your information and getting yourself in very dangerous situations. You might be chatting with someone on Facebook that you may think it perfectly safe and you would never know that they were a predator trying to get your information, while pretending to be somebody else.
Another topic is children having too much use of technology. Instead of going outside to play or playing with their toys children are now "playing" on their own IPads or even IPhones. I don't like when I see kids getting phones for their 7th or 8th birthday, I think their missing out on so many other things then just the internet.
I agree, you'd never know who is a predator and who is safe. Sometimes you may think someone is a predator and they are actually safe and when you think they're safe they are most definitely not safe.
Deletei think your right, technology can be fun until a limit, and kids these days should not be getting electronics at such a young age like thats not right. Also yes you could be talking to a very dangerous person that seems to be just a regular nice person.
DeleteI agree at times it can be super helpful but people should be aware of how much time they spend on it while they can do something else more productive. Kids should learn to be social at a young age with having kids at such young age have technology it will decrease their chance of having good actual friendships and it will also increase the chance of not having to deal with strangers.
DeleteTechnology is a great thing, but in all honesty, do we really need it? Is it making anything better? I mean sure it makes homework a ton easier, but it makes tests harder because you can't find the answers you have to really think about it, but than you think about it and you know completely nothing. Writing on computers makes it so you don't remember anything but when you actually hand write it you can remember more. Technology is getting to the point that no one ever wants to go outside, everyone is becoming lazy. The only thing people want to do when they hangout with people is sit on their phone and drive around, rarely talking.
ReplyDeleteI agree and also think sometimes about if we really need technology, but I think sense society has depended on technology for so long now that people would literally go insane without.
DeleteI agree with Ally's comment, and your post. I believe that since we've had all this technology for several years now that people would honestly go insane without it.
DeleteI agree that it makes things easier and we get information right away but now kids want everything right away they now have trouble waiting for things.
DeleteNope, we need technology for other things like contacting someone far away and entertainment. Not everyone cheats on homework like you and it clueless while taking the tests.
DeleteI love being able to be on social media and texting people. Though, I feel as myself and I'm sure a lot of people can relate, are becoming lazy and dependent on the internet. Dependent on it for mainly entertainment purposes. I feel as if people, including myself, are a bit clueless on what to do without phones, or laptops. I love being outside, but I feel as if the internet and social media distracts me from doing what I like to do out of the "internet world." I think it's addicting, I think it's hard on the mind. There is plenty of cyberbullying. Which can lead to depression. I think people some times tend to be become antisocial, instead of people meeting up with friends, they tend to text or facetime/skype, find some other way instead. Instead of 8, 9, 10 year olds going outside, or playing with toys inside, they go for their IPad or phone.
ReplyDeleteInternet and social media can be a fun and useful way to communicate and talk to people, but there are definitely negative effects!
Social media is a great way to keep in touch with people and keep informed about whats going on outside of your town but it is very addictive. Overall it makes people lazy. Also teens are literally becoming addicted to their phones, we feel naked without them, are usually always on them, and can't stand not being on our phones. While its a good place to meet new people, its also a place where cyberbullying is very easy to do. People can create fake names and say whatever they want to people just because they can and its not easy to catch them. Social media definitely distracts me from what i need to be doing, whether thats homework or doing laundry. I find myself being very antisocial because i don't really need to communicate with people in real life when i can text or facetime them. The biggest way i think social media effects people it would be the fact that instead of going outside 7, 8, and 9 year olds (mainly) are on an iPad or even a phone, making them more prone to lack of vitamin D (from the lack of sunlight) which can later lead to depression.
ReplyDeleteOverall social media can be an amazing tool to communicate with but it can have just as many negative effects as positive effects.
I agree, social media also distracts me from doing more active activites, daily chores, or even going to sleep.
DeleteI agree,Sometimes I do wish I would've done something more productive that night instead of on my phone but at the time you don't really think that's what the tricky part is,you don't realize until you've already spent that time on your phone and t's already too late.
DeleteI agree as well. Between the risk of cyberbullying and/or children being addicted to their phones as they get older, I don't see why some children under the age of 13 have free range on the internet.
DeleteThe internet has many perks, but with pros there are always cons. I feel like I'm spending a lot more time on my phone than reading, which is something I used to really enjoy. I still do enjoy, but I find it hard to read without going on my phone now. Phones can be distracting us from spending time with people we love. It's also especially sad to see kids growing up on this technology, which is leading them to be even more dependent on their phones growing up. Social media has also morphed into somewhere some people feel like they can't be themselves without insults being thrown at them, or people criticizing what they post. People have become so insecure about their physical image because of either rude comments on their own posts, or seeing other people being brought down. People, especially children, being exposed to this can cause major self esteem issues and their view on the world can turn sour. The internet can be used for many great things to discover, but should we really let it define the world for us?
ReplyDeleteTo answer you question at the end no we should not let it define who we are or who we are going to be.
DeleteThe anonymity offered from social media is also a good thing, since sometimes it allows people to be themselves behind a false name. It's not always a good thing to be anonymous, but this is a pro at least.
DeleteI agree, Tabbi. Anonymity can help keep you safe by using a false name, but it can also cause dangers, such as not being able to trust anyone.
DeleteI agree with Tabbi also. Anonymity is a great thing to keep you safe by using a fake name but it also makes it easier for cyberbullies to get away with what they're saying because no one knows who it is.
DeleteI agree, there is the good and the bad. When you get free time you should go on your phone, but not when there is plenty of other things to do, like spending time with your family, seeing your friends, helping out around the house, and many of other things.
Deletei feel that social media effects our lives big time now a days. we find out so much information about people sometimes good and bad. i feel like our lives should be more private than how it is. if we didnt have social media we wouldnt know alot of people we do now, which is kinda cool to think of i guess. you can make a lot of friends on social media. the bad thing is you can easily get bullied or get your feelings hurt. its easier to text a person that actually talk to then in real life sometimes and i feel like people need to talk to eachother more in person. relationships theses day have alot to do with texting and sending pictures and i dont think thats a very good relationship
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way because so many people are just hooked on it.
DeleteI agree with this on how people now a days are just so hook and concerned on what people are posting and knowing what everyone else is doing they are not concerned on what they are doing with there own lives.
DeleteI agree, to all good things that social media does, it can also be a really bad thing as well, people get harassed online and cyber bullied. The scary thing is what you put out there, you can't pull back.
DeleteSocial media is becoming a big part of many peoples' lives. A lot of people basically live for their social media. I feel as if technology and social media are going to make people lazier. As most of us said, it is making us lazier. I depend on the internet for many things. We hardly use text books in school anymore. If I need to look up a word I don't go to a dictionary. I just run to the internet and it'll be right there. Technology such as laptops, smartphones, etc. are making things easier for kids just to find without actually learning what it is. They just look up their answers and write them down.
ReplyDeleteSocial media distracts people from doing what they're suppose to. Kids stop doing their homework, won't do chores, won't even go outside anymore because they're glued to their phones. All in all, technology has it's pros and cons, but I honestly think people can't live without it.
I agree now a days people only can live with internet in their life it seems like. People can't go one day without using their devices and such it is becoming such a part of our life that it is actually sickening because many people just sit on their devices and don't get any activity and that is just bad for them and they are so reliant on technology today.
DeleteI agree, social media is good AND bad, It helps us get to know people better and to keep in touch with family and friends, but it's also highly addictive and we won't want to do anything else besides go on our phones 24/7
DeleteI agree how social media is pretty much taking over peoples lives. They basically can not live with out it. They need to be on it 24/7 or they feeling like they are missing out on something, but really there not missing much at all.
DeleteI really don't have any negative effects of social media on me because I never go on the trash. The only thing I know about social media is that people make Facebook rants about you that you can't see and in real life they don't say a single word to you about what they were ranting about.
ReplyDeleteI agree, a lot of people hide behind their computers, not exposing themselves because they don't feel the need to, and that's how some people make a living.
DeleteSometimes I'll find myself sitting on the couch, then I'll go on my phone, then an hour has passed and all I did was go on my phone. I usually try to avoid doing this but sometimes I can't break from my phone. I do feel like this makes me kinda lazy somewhat, and I don't want to be active or doing something instead of going on my phone, or laptop, whatever it may be.
ReplyDeleteI agree i find myself now doing the same thing every once in a while. Its very hard not to be on any technology devices now a days because everything revolves around it.
DeleteI agree, this is what a lot of people do, and they don't even realize how much they are wasting their day.
DeleteI also agree it does take some time out my day sometimes to actually go out and do something with friends and not sit around and just do nothing.
DeleteSocial media is a big part of our lives - good and bad. It's bad because it's addicting and hard to get off or leave. It prevents us from spending time with our family because we're too engrossed with our online lives. We also tend to put to much information about our personal lives on social media and predators can get that information and find out a a lot about you. Like when you tag your location when you post a picture they can find out where you are. But that's not where it stops, once they know who you are they can find out who your family is and get their information. Kids these days are growing up with more and more technology than we've ever had. They don't get outside as much anymore they are sitting inside playing on their parents phones. Kids these days are also not getting a enough vitamin D, and that's leading to depression. Is your child's health really worth letting them go on the internet all the time?
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! Kids being brought up by technology may seem like the easier route, but it can cause a lot of problems in the future.
DeleteI completely agree, a lot of kids, a lot of people in general are becoming lazier, and more reliant on socializing over the media.
DeleteThere are some good things about always having your cell phone of iPod with you, but at the same time there are many bad things. Some people are so hooked to their phones that they don't even realize what's happening around them, it's like they have tunnel vision just for their phones and everything else is black, I can't tell you how many times someone has been saying my name or trying to get my attention and I don't hear them because I am completely focused on my phone and nothing else, but, they do keep us in contact just in case there is an emergency, in which case we'd be able to contact our parents if there was a problem.
ReplyDeleteSocial Media can have its perks, at times we rely on it too much to where it can become an addiction. Some kids don't even go outside half the time and it can lead to becoming extremely unhealthy and lazy. But it connects us to relatives and friends that we don't see often and it has its perks but how much is too much? Limiting can be a challenge because once you need information you want to do more stuff on your phone leading to hours on your phone without you even noticing. Some people have a hard time socializing so it's easier for them to text and hangout on the phone instead of face to face. But will lay learn to deal with "real world" instead of hiding behind their phone. It can be fun but at what cost?
ReplyDeleteThe internet can be a great place for catching up with family and old friends, but like you put, how much is too much? Kids are spending an abundant amount of time online, just for recreational purposes.
DeleteIt's almost like the internet is going to help in raising our next generation a lot more than it has in previous years, and I'm worried children will grow dependent on it.
DeleteI agree too the internet is going to be used for alot of things and it will be improved so on into our next generation.
DeleteI agree
DeleteThe internet is used by all of us its a good way to connect with friends and have good conversations then it can also have some negative affects also such as hackers and scam sites and fake people on the the internet that can scam you into accidentally buying something or it could say like get this certain product for free just enter to win all that stuff you got to watch out for on the internet thats the really bad side about the interet but overall i personally love the internet ad so do all of you it just has a bad side to it.
