IoT: The Internet of Things

IoT: The Internet of Things

- The screen on you refrigerator tells you that your blood sugar is running low, so you grab some fruit.

- While flying to your vacation destination, you realize that you forgot to turn the thermostat down at home, so you do it from your smart phone.

- Your car is about due for an oil change (using that fancy synthetic oil you like), and your mechanic is ready for you, because he monitors your engine, as well as his supply of synthetics.

This might sound like the future, or maybe you've heard of one of these things already happening - both are true. They're examples of what things might be like with the "Internet of Things".

In the IoT, EVERYTHING is connected via the internet (cloud): cars, appliances, planes, security, hospitals, animals and.....yes, you. The idea is that everything will communicate, and, in the end, this communication will help us to lead better lives.

"The Internet of Things is the next generation of personal computing, whereby objects interact, potentially independently, with each other and with their environment,”

"The Internet of Things is the combination of sensors, actuators, distributed computing power..."

"Tiny detectors that can gather and relay data about location, activity, and health...", "The IoT makes it possible to monitor and control the location, condition, and behavior of objects, machinery and devices through networks."

Here are some resources to look at that will help you understand the IoT. Take a look at them, and talk about what you think about the idea. Pros and cons.

  1. Pros are that you can use machinery devices and such without being there or having to do anyting. The cons though is that its human made which means there are flaws in it and things can go wrong.

    1. I agree, there will always be flaws in everything and I think it would be too easy to hack into personally.

    2. i agree also because of the use of pros for machinery is really frequent

  2. It could be useful in many cool ways but hackers could potentially hack you. For example if you safe locked your house from your phone and they hack your phone they could unlock your house and have full access to everything. Yes it is convenient but you need to have a trust worthy system.

    1. I agree. If the system is coming from a trustworthy provider, I would consider it more.

    2. I agree, you have to have a system you can't hack or it won't work.

    3. Yes it could be very useful but I agree you need to look at the dangers of it first.

    4. Yes, i agree. In most causes it would be useful but than again very easy to hack into so it wouldn't be as convenient as people might think it would be.

    5. Yeah, technology has too many loop holes right now. Systems would need a foolproof security aspect before I'd risk connecting everything

    6. I agree, hackers could get there hands on private information.

  3. I think that some things could be useful by using it, but I don't like how advanced the world is becoming, in all reality, having more computers to control nearly every aspect of your life, there is a LOT bound to happen sooner or later.

    1. I agree, it seems that we can't even go a day without some form of technology. we are literally becoming addicted to our phones and computers so if something gets hacked and everything goes down we would be so lost.

    2. I agree. With technology advancing at an alarming rate and becoming more connected, it makes hacking into personal information very easy.

    3. I agree, get rid of all the computers in the unnecessary things.

    4. I also agree with the technology advancing way to fast there is going to be a lot in the future

    5. i agree with you, i dont really like how computers(robots) pretty much control everything around here something bad is bound to happen with electronics controlling more things

    6. I agree, one day technology will surpass us humans and do everything for us, and the threat of a hack can be severely dangerous.

  4. I feel there a plenty of pros to this, but one potential con would probably stop me from connecting everything to my phone. It makes hacking into your life that much easier if everything is connected to one device, and that's one thing I don't want to risk. Sure, it could prevent harm in the present, but the harm in the future could be much greater if all your devices got hacked.

    1. I agree if everything is connected together it makes hacking so much easier. It may make are life better and easier but are we really willing to put all of are information on the line for this.

    2. I agree, this does make hacking a lot easier and it puts your life in big danger.

      Delete
    3. I also agree is it has many pros but one con could be great harm.

    4. I feel there is more cons to all this, their is more than just hackers that could go wrong.

    5. I agree. Its so easy now for someone to hack phones that if you have all of your most valuable info on there and some one gets it, you're out of luck.

  5. There are alot of pros, but there are many potential flaws because it is man made. All minds work differently so, for example, if the person programming the system didn't account for how hackers minds work it would be so easy for someone to hack a system because our minds are wired different.

    1. I agree because everyone is different and think different and i agree that we don't create things to be hacked so we don't think about it being hacked which means that it could be hacked easier.

    2. I agree. I feel like this system makes hacking almost too easy.

  6. Pros: This type of technology could revolutionize our lives, make it easier, and more enjoyable, cons: but connecting everything to one single device could be incredibly dangerous, and the more wealthy you are, and say the more things you have connected to that device, increase its value for the hackers to try and steal your information.

    1. I agree, having all of your home lights, garage doors, whatever connected to your house, say you accidentally turn on the oven and it burns your house down, Maybe something like that won't happen but still, it'll be a lot easier for people to get into your personal live.

      Delete
    2. Hackers will probably see how much a rich person has connected and create a plan to get as much as they can. Technology is never %100 guaranteed in security

      Delete
    3. I agree the pros on this is very good and could have huge effect with our lives, but not everyone sees it that way people will try and hack everything and it could get very dangerous.

      Delete
  7. Pros of it is you wouldn't have to be there to do certain things, but certain things you should have a lock on or something. Because someone could get into it and do something wrong.

    1. i agree these certain things are very cool, and interesting but i feel like we should have a very good lock system so people cant break into you house or anything that is yours,

    2. I agree with siggy that we should have a good lock system

  8. Pros: This technology could change are lives in lots of different ways. It will make everything easier to do. Con: it would make us a lot lazier and not as active. People could also hack into are lives and find out personal information.

    1. I agree this technology can make are day to day life much more easier but that not always a good thing. People could no longer want to do anything for them self.

    2. I agree, I think it's quite dangerous. I don't think it's safe, if you had cameras to help watch your house while your away, hackers or someone looking to steal your personal information could find it a lot easier, find out about were you live... I think it's scarier and wouldn't want anything to do with it.

  9. I don't like the internet of things because I don't want to be watched and tracked by the government 24/7. The only good thing about it, is that you can monitor someone better who has a illness and get them treatment faster.

  10. Pros: being able to turn things off in your house from your phone and making life easier. Cons: it will be easier for hackers to hack into your life and people may get lazy.

    1. I agree people could take advantage and may become lazy and unhealthy.

  11. I think that the Internet of Things has many positive things going for it, but for me to have an app to access my home security I don't know if I'd always feel safe. Hackers are already going crazy hacking into social media accounts, bank accounts, and cell phones. Just imagine what they'd do if they could figure out how to hack into someones thermostat or car. Don't get me wrong if I forgot to do a necessity at home and I'm already gone, I'd love to just go on my smart phone and be able to fix it, but it this really safe? In my opinion, No.

  12. It's fun to imagine for sure, to have everything so easily connected. It'd be beneficial because you could prioritize bigger things and not have to worry about the small stuff, letting you live a full life. But, at the same time, the cost could be awful. By cost I mean you could lose everything you own just because of one hacker. Hackers are appearing more and more as we get more tech-y, so I wouldn't doubt that in the future many will know a lot about the new technology-- enough to break into it.

    1. I agree, it maybe more helpful for everyone, but it's also helpful for hackers too, it allows them more gateways to your personal information.

    2. I agree, I think it's more dangerous then helpful in someways.

  13. there are a lot of pros that you use fro machinery you just have to be skilled with the machine so the internet of things is like how you would use the network on your computer so you would use your computer like everyone would use a different type of machine

  14. i think the pros to things are yes you can help your health alot better and it will be very more inconvenient but also their will be so many more hackers trying to get into your things and you could loose a bunch of your stuff and your more at risk.

    1. I agree with you that you are more at risk and could potentially be hacked to where you lose a lot of your information or someone steals it and acts as you.

  15. The pro is you can control and see what's happening at your house from miles away, whether you're on vacation, or maybe simply at work. But it also makes it more convenient and easier for hackers to "hack into your life" they might be able to possibly hack not only into your phone or laptop, but they could also maybe see what's being controlled in your home, maybe you have cameras set while you're away and they can see all of that. It makes it quite scary. Not only personal information you may have on your phone, but more information on your house.

    1. I agree, being able to control things inside your home through your cell phone hundreds of miles away is pretty convenient, but, there is always something out to get you in the world. Someone trying to steal your information and even seeing what's happening in your house at all times is a scary feeling, I wouldn't want that

      Delete
    2. I also agree that it's convenient, but it does make it very possible for people to hack into your world. I'd be very cautious

  16. It could be useful in a lot of ways but hackers could hack you. If you have your phone as a tv remote and they hack your phone they can change your channels whenever they want. Yes it is convenient but you need to have a trust worthy system.
