"The Cloud"
You've probably heard it said that the world has gotten smaller. This is true because, since the development of the Internet (the 'Cloud') and such things as Tweeting, texting, instant messaging, social networking (Facebook, MySpace), we've grown much closer. The distance between us, geographically, doesn't matter near as much anymore.
In many ways, this is a good thing. But, in some ways - not so much. While the world has grown closer together, we're also closer to those people who would try to hurt us or take advantage of us. Most people are good - but it's easier than ever for those that aren't to target people who aren't prepared, or aware of the dangers.
So, you've just met a student who has NEVER been on the internet. Their family just moved to the area, and just signed up for internet access at home for the first time. Knowing what you know right now, what would you warn that person about? What would you tell them to be careful of, when they're on the Web? How would you tell them to behave - what precautions should they take?
You don't have to look this up - base it on what you already know - what you've already learned. You CAN research a little on the internet, if you need to...

Be CAREFUL. The internet is useful, but at many times it has incorrect facts. Do not believe everything you see and don't trust everyone. Many people can act like they're nice to get what they want. There are predators who will lie to you, make sure what you read or see is based on factual data. Never give anyone your full name or address. Books will always be there if you're not sure, don't hesitate to look something up from them or even get someone else's opinion. Have fun, but be cautious. Enjoy what the internet offers, but don't let it go to your head.
ReplyDeleteYes, agreed. You should never trust anyone on the internet.
Deleteagreed! very good point
DeleteI also agree there so many people out there on the internet that should not be trusted. You should never give out any of your personal information out there on the cloud because you really can never be to sure who you are giving it too.
DeleteAgreed, look at Tmartn over their promoting a gambling site to kids he just so happened to find and win 6k but it just so happened to be his own gambling site.
DeleteWill books "always be there"? I'm not so sure. Probably in some form, I guess!
DeleteI agree, but I do think books will always be there.
DeleteYou need to be weary of hackers and know when something is not right. When you are on a website and something pops up on your screen saying they want you to click on it for getting money or something like that. They will try and get you to use your email or address phone number etc. These people on the internet will try and get your money in anyway they can. You need to look out for scams on the internet and steer clear of them.
ReplyDeleteHackers are a good point, that's one thing I didn't think of, very dangerous. AGREED!!
DeleteTrue I agree! Be aware of con artists and the hackers.
DeleteI agree, people dedicate their lives to hacking just to make other people miserable, some people out there could get a person's information without even breaking a sweat and possibly could ruin their lives without even breaking a sweat. The world can be a scary place because nobody really knows who or what is out to get you.
DeleteI would tell them, to not click on "click bait" DO NOT to give random strangers your information, or share or click on virus links, never post personal information or credit card information. and BE CAREFUL
ReplyDeletei agree you need to be very careful with things on the internet never give your personal information to a strange website!
DeleteI would tell them that the internet can be a great advantage to there home but she/he should be careful because it can be addicting. The internet can also be dangerous, so to be aware of dangerous people. Never put out personal information to someone, and if you're going to meet up with an internet friend, always let people know where you're going with and never go alone. But overall the internet can be great to stay in touch with family and friends.
ReplyDeleteI agree, definitely don't meet up with anyone and not tell anyone where you are going. If you were to disappear no one would know where to go to or who to call, always tell people where you are going and who you are going with, people can be very cruel.
DeleteI agree also, meeting up with people you have no clue about isn't a good idea you don't what could go wrong.
DeleteI agree! Giving out personal information is never a good idea.
DeleteI agree with you it is addicting but you do have to be aware that there are hackers too so watch what you click on because it could be a scam.
DeleteI didn't even remember to say about how addicting it can be. Thats a good point, since for some it's become a major issue. We rely on technology, and while that's not a bad thing because it allows us to do a lot more, it's also not a good thing because if it were to suddenly disappear we'd probably struggle.
DeleteI would tell them the internet is a great way to connect with friends, however with every pro, there's a con. You can interact with anyone anywhere, but that also means anyone could interact with you. There are a lot of people who use the internet for reasons that don't seem quite right, and they can be dangerous. People who have never used the internet should use extra precaution--they might not know what to expect as much as someone who has experience. I would tell them to know what and what not to share on the internet.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, if I never used internet I would probably want to ask someone for help or more info on which sites to browse, and which ones to avoid.
DeleteI agree the internet can be fun while also taking precautions and to be safe
DeleteI agree, it is a great way to connect with friends, but you just need to be careful of the other things you do on there, it could get ugly.
DeleteI agree because the internet can be a very great place and at the same time it can be very bad and you never know what other people are doing on the internet.
DeleteI agree, also don't click on random ads sometimes people can hack into you personal information which is never a good thing.
DeleteOne of the first things I would tell them is that there is nothing good on the internet and it is were brain cells go to die. If they still wanted to go on the internet I would tell them to stay away from the cancers that are facebook and buzzfeed. I would also tell them to never give away their phone number, their address, and their credit card. If they wanted to know how to behave just behave like every other youtube comment and to make fun of the liberals for trump becoming president. I would also warn them of liars who say their is more then 2 genders.
ReplyDeleteI would tell them, do not click any advertisements were it says, You have won a free prize!!! click here to claim!!! also, maybe invest in some software security, with hackers nowadays, hackers can get their hands on all your vital information, like your address, your credit card number, and your background info. The internet can be a safe enjoyable place if used properly, but misusing the internet can result in your information being leaked out to the public or worse.
ReplyDeleteI also agree because half of the internet is filled with scams and false advertisements and that can lead to you getting your system hacked so like you said i would install a security system.
DeleteAgree, hackers are out there, and even though we may think just because they aren't right next to you or sitting across the table from you that they won't be able to see you what you have been doing on your computer, you're wrong, it's scary that people can just go and find all your information like that.
DeleteI agree advertisements these days can be very scary and harmful to your computer and software security would be a good idea and you never want to give out any information on the internet to any ads like that.
DeleteThere is nothing wrong with facebook in my opinion but like others say there are hackers out there so it could be very dangerous and can effect a lot of devices and they have to just get access to your account and they can literally just wipe everything so i think it could be very dangerous.
ReplyDeleteI agree, hackers are a real threat when your on the internet, So I would recommend install a security system on your computer, just to minimize your chances of being hacked.
DeleteHackers are a joke just don't give out your passwords and your information and your fine.
DeleteI would tell he/she to take precautions on what you post regarding of any personal information that can be too private. Also if you join any social media websites like Instagram, Facebook, or Snapchat to have a private account so you don't have a follower that may be strange or cause any uncomfortable situations to you or your family.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. If you have a public social media account, it can help lead to someone trying to cause harm or hack your account. Especially ig you leave your location on while posting.
DeleteAgreed I put the same thing on my post because I think that is the biggest issue that many kids put to much info online.
DeleteI agree that they should take precautions on what they post because if there is too much information then that can make them unsafe as to giving people private information that they shouldn't know.
DeleteAgreed. With so many terrible people out there if you post something too personal they could track you down. Or if you put your credit card number into the wrong site the wrong people could find it
DeleteBe very careful. While the internet is a great place to communicate and its very easy to use making it easier for people to hack websites, steal your credit card info, and even track down where you use your phone or computer and find out where you are. Also be careful with what you post on a social media account because when you're applying for college or a job they can track everything back to that account
ReplyDeleteyes i agree with you. people need to be careful because people are watching and looking at other peoples actions.
DeleteThat is very true, being smart about your information is a very smart thing to do. It is so easy for people to get information about you and use that info in a bad way. Always be careful about what you put on the web.
DeleteWatch out for ads or popups that say "click here or you won" it always says you win money or other different prizes. You definitely don't EVER win anything. DON'T click on those links, they can cause viruses, someone hacking your computer, or someone taking your money from your account if you go that far to put your personal stuff on there, they can do anything with your personal things. Never talk to anyone on websites that you don't personally know, they could get you to do anything, or get you to say anything. Don't trust anyone on the internet. Be careful about what you say or do on the internet, it could fire back on you in the future.
ReplyDeleteYes never click the popups people can hack into your computer when you click them.
DeleteGood point! Pop-ups should never be trusted. Clicking on one is basically an open invitation for someone to hack your device.
DeleteGreat point, those popups can lead to bad place, and lead people to untrusted places that can get them in trouble.
DeleteI agree. Popups can not only lead you to bad places but can infect your computer with a really bad virus.
DeleteAgreed, pop ups are made to lure people in, especially those who don't know what they are. They could trick you into giving out personal information and/or could put a virus in your computer
DeleteThis is a great point on how there are so many people out there that use the internet has way to scam people.
DeleteThe internet is a very useful tool, whether it's used for communication, information, school/work uses... There are also some bad things connected with using the internet. There's scammers; thieves, maybe looking to steal identity, personal information, credit card information. Not every thing said on the internet (Social media, supposed information sites, etc.) There is plenty of hate and cyberbullying on the internet, and social media sites. No matter what site you use, your privacy for what you look up, your personal information, such as were you live, what you look like, family members, your privacy is ever guaranteed. The internet can be a big distraction to some people and may even become addicting. A lot of time can be and is some times wasted on the internet. I think one big and common problem with internet usage, is people become to dependent on it. Whether needing to use it for a book report, or just to text/talk to someone over social media. I think it causes a lot of cheating (homework), laziness, etc. There is a lot of bad websites out there, such as scams. Internet can be a fun and useful tool, a good way to keep in-touch with friends or family, but it has some dangerous sides. Be careful what you do and what kind of information you give out!
ReplyDeleteThere are always going to be pros and cons of using the internet. The internet helps us in many ways. Whether we need to search something up, gain information on something, or use it to help us. You can't always believe what you see on the internet though. The internet can be a dangerous place. It could lead you to different places that aren't very safe. So whenever you're on there, be careful and watch out.
ReplyDeletethe internet can be good and bad. the good about the internet is that you can find any source of information anytime you want, but it can be wrong sometimes. another good thing is it can be very entertaining and you can watch any video/movie you'd like. the bad thing is sometimes it can be illegal to do stuff on the internet
ReplyDeleteYes i agree the internet definitely has its pros and cons
DeleteI also agree that there is many great things about the internet but I also know with all those great things there are so many not so amazing things.
DeleteI think everyone pretty much agrees with each other on this subject because of the internet yes we do have a lot of advantages, but so do hackers, the internet is just as if not more useful to them than it is to us, also another thing that is a problem is viruses, they can be just as bad as hackers, maybe not stealing your credit card bad, but they drown your computer, make it slower, make ads pop up, and other things which will cost you to pay money to get them removed. Another thing is Social Media, sure it is good in some ways, but for some people not so much, some people are constantly bullied on social media making their lives not so great, as for other people, they might have a lot of followers and alot of friends making social media what their lives revolve around.
ReplyDeleteI would tell the new student the number one thing is to be careful! No matter how much everyone tells you it's still the number one warning everyone needs to know. Whatever the student puts on social media can instantly be seen and accessed by everyone. Check and double check whatever you put out there. I would also tell the student to think before you post because once it's out there it will always be in the cloud.
