The Right To Be Forgotten

The Right To Be Forgotten

A couple of years ago, the European Union Court of Justice said that citizens have the right to ask that links be removed if they contain information that is "inadequate, irrelevant or no longer relevant." (They determined this following a court case where a Spanish man won the right to have negative information about him removed from Google search results. SEE LINK BELOW) There are efforts to make this the law outside of Europe, including in the U.S.

We've talked about the fact that information you post online is essentially permanent. Should it be, in all cases? Should someone have the right to have old, irrelevant information expunged from the Web?

Read this article, and also the arguments that follow it, ("The Arguments"), to help you form your opinion.

"Should There Be A Right To Be Forgotten?"

  1. I believe there should be a right to be forgotten if the picture is irrelevant but if the picture is evidence to something groundbreaking or illegal then yes the authorities have a right to have that picture in order to solve that specific case. But if that picture seems like no big deal to you and big deal to that person in the picture. It doesn't matter if you think it is unnecessary you are not the person in the picture.

    1. I agree with you. I believe that they have the right to be forgotten if it's irrelevant, but if it is evidence then it has the right to remain.

    2. I agree. Unless it's something controversial or illegal, there's really no reason for it to stay if it was in the past.

    3. I agree, why keep something if it's something you don't want on the internet? Unless it's evidence for something.

    4. I agree strongly with meghan

    5. I agree, you should have the right to delete an irrelevant. However, you should not be able to delete things that you have done that are illegal.

  2. I think that if you want to be forgotten you can, I don't think it's fair that you have to live with something that you might regret for the rest of your life, when maybe it was a mistake in your life and you just want to move forward.

    1. I agree if it is something that was personal that shouldn't have been on there you have rights to take that picture off

    2. I agree. If it was some minor mistake in your past, you have the right to move passed it and not have to be reminded about it.

    3. Yes but only with some things.

  3. I think that some things on the internet should be forgotten. You don't want people always knowing what you did in the past because I believe people can change. And its not fair to them that it is always going to be there. But I think if someone just keeps doing something stupid all the time it should stay because then people know who they really are. To be honest I think its how you are in real life if you are kind to someone then they shouldn't care if bad things happened to you in your past and if you are the person who is always rude and bringing people down I think you deserve what you get.

    1. I also agree with you because if someone keeps continuously doing something and just expecting it to keep going away I don't think it should

    2. I agree people can make mistakes in the past and if you want that to be forgot you should be able to. People can change and they shouldn't always have to be reminded about the mistakes that they once made.

    3. I agree. If it was a mistake or something that only happened once, then it should definitely be forgotten. However like you said, if it's repetitive then it probably should stay on the internet.

  4. I believe that if something is really bothering you then you have the right to be forgotten. You shouldn't be forced to live with something you regret. Nobody wants their past to haunt them. So if it's something that severely bothers them then I believe they have the right to be forgotten.

    1. I agree with this because not everyone is bad and people just want to forget things and sometimes the internet wont let them so yes i agree with this to a certain degree.

  5. Some things should definitely be forgotten, especially if they're irrelevant. If a link from some minor experience in the past popped up every time your name was Googled, it would be not only annoying, but maybe embarrassing. If this passed information is old news and no longer relevant to you as a person, it should be forgotten.

    2. I agree, "the past is the past" and thats how it should stay. people shouldn't have to be reminded of there mistakes.

    3. Yes I agree if it is embarrassing then the person should have automatic rights to take the picture offline.

    4. I also agree if the person wants it off the internet they should have to power to take it off.

    5. i think people should have to deal with what the did in there past

    6. I think you should be able to be forgotten, I completely agree.

  6. I don't think people should be able to do that because in that case others could use it in bad ways. If people do something bad on the internet they can just erase their stuff and you won't see it again. This could be very bad in cases where it comes to trial and such you need that proof so no one gets blamed for someone elses actions. I think we should not be able to take away our internet history.

    1. Yes I agree with you but it only depends what you are trying to erase.

    2. Yes I agree here, it should depend on what is being deleted.

    3. I agree, not just anyone should have the right for just anything to be deleted.

    4. i also agree it should be fair that not just anyone should delete everything.

    8. I agree it depends on what you're deleting. If its just little things that you no longer find funny but you shouldn't be able to deleting things like criminal records.

  7. I can see if I was a boss of a company or something that I would want to see what that person has done in the pass, but on the other hand if I was that person who was trying to get a job and has made some bad choices in the past I would want those choices to be taken off the internet.

    1. yes i agree with you cameron i would want to know what a candidate for a job has done in the past, because who knows they might have not changed. i always might want that law to come through because people can change and in the moment you might have posted or did something bad but regretted it so much and you just want it to go away

      Delete
    2. In this situation I agree with Camryn. If I was a business owner and was looking up my new worker I'd want to know what his/her background was like, and the posts would help.

  8. I don't think people should be able to be forgotten. If some dude if creeping on little boys and girls online, they don't deserve the right to be forgotten because they could just do it again and no one would know.

    1. I agree, people should know about these type of people.

    2. I also agree with this because some for some people you need to see what they have done so they can be punished especially if it was something bad.

    3. i agree thats creepy and scary i dont think one of those kinds of people should be forgotten

    4. Hiding important information shouldn't be done for these types of reasons. It's important to know who to trust.

    5. I agree with that it isnt good to hide things from others.

  9. I don't think there should be a right to be forgotten, yes people should have the right to privacy, but also not be exploited on the web. Like sex offenders should be on the internet so people can see. but like someones arrest records shouldn't be public.

  10. I don't think that some specific things posted or shared should be forgotten. Once it's out there it should have to stay. If you have a problem with this then don't share things you don't want people to know about you online. The authorities use these things to look into cases more, it can help solve criminal cases. I seriously believe that once you post something it shouldn't be "forgotten" because of that reason.

  11. I believe while the idea of being forgotten is harmless, it won't actually bring about a lot of good. Erasing even the smallest things from our knowledge of earth's history could be bad. If one person does it, will everyone start doing it? Will history just end up being "polished" and "airbrushed" by the government/companies in charge, to the point where important information could be lost? There is some right to be forgotten, sure, but I don't know how much I like the idea of a censored history.

    1. I do agree to a certain point, if someone was doing something illegal in a photo, i think it should remain on the internet.

  12. i am between sides with this, maybe if someone has changed from the past and yo want to get rid of anything you regret posting or you just want to hide bad things you have done so you get hired or soemthing.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I also agree with both sides, but I mean if you changed from the past you wouldn't always need to delete it. You could just hide it from the public where no one would see it.

  13. I think there should be a right to be forgotten in certain situations, for example, if the picture is incorrect or if the things posted are from a hacking. However, if the things posted were by the actual person just wanting to delete it I don't think it has to be deleted. People need to learn not to post things if they are going to regret it later on.

    1. I agree, some people don't realize that what they put out there, can never be pulled back once it's out there, some people think they can post whatever they want and then wonder why it was such a big deal.

  14. i dont think it would be a good thing to delete anything i would just keep it hidden from the public there is sometimes people will rat on you about that but its nothing to get upset about but still if there is anything bad on your computer then maybe you should delete it.

    1. I agree, if anything you should be able to hide it from the public, but you shouldn't be able to delete it.

  15. Unless it's something that could show evidence for something illegal, a picture, comment, or post, should have the right to be forgotten. Its something they did in the past or had in the past that might've been embarrassing, or a picture that was put on the internet by someone, other than yourself, of personal information, or a picture you didn't want on the internet, for whatever reason. You should have the right to have that taken off of the internet for good.

  16. I don't think anyone should be able to remove anything from the internet because if you were able to remove it than you'd never learn your lesson or what you did wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't think you should be allowed to be "Forgotten". You could have done something terrible like, child pornography or something like that, then you could start doing it again and fly below everyones radar, simply because, what you did was basically forgotten.
