Your Online Image #2

Your Online Image #2

You are the young manager of a local ice cream parlor that is beloved by local families. You are looking to hire some teens for the summer, when the shop is open late every evening. You require an application and at least one reference. It occurs to you that you could look on Facebook to find out a bit more about the applicants.

What might you find that would make you not hire someone?

Is there anything wrong with using Facebook in this way?

  1. Things that i would find that would make me not hire someone is me seeing if they are immature on Facebook or say inappropriate things on there. I would not hire people who don't have a solid background that I could trust. I do not think theres anything wrong with using Facebook in this way because its fair. The people who are on Facebook take a chance by putting their information out there and letting other people know who you really are. So i don't think there is anything wrong with using Facebook in that way.

    1. I agree this is not a wrong way to use Facebook because people choose what they post basically telling everybody how they are.

  2. I don't think there is anything wrong with using Facebook to look at someone's profile who might be working for you, you can find out a lot using Facebook, and it's so easy to do, looking on their Facebook profile you can see what they have been posting lately, what type of things they share, are they involving illegal things, are they using bad language to prove a point, are they taking pictures while they're underage drinking, who knows, but the point is, if there is bad stuff on their profiles, it's going to give the Employer a bad representation of the person he might hire.

    1. I agree, I would check Facebook profiles if I was hiring people, and I would recommend deleting all your social media accounts before going to a job interview.

    2. I also agree but i wouldn't delete my accounts because i see no need to do so

    3. I agree facebook is a great thing that you can see peoples history and how they really act. If you are not careful on you could be out of a job is these managers check Facebook.

  3. If people post inappropriate things, or disrespectful to others on social media why hire you? I'd be looking for somebody that is mature, and respectful to all around him. You'd also have to have my trust. I don't believe there is anything wrong with using Facebook this way either because people have the decision to post what they want. Whether knowing it will reflect for work later on, or not.

    1. Yes I agree, I too would be looking for someone who is mature and can handle themselves on social media.

    2. I agree. I don't think there is anything wrong with using a facebook account, you can see what people are like and what they're choosing to post

  4. If i found a picture of them doing drugs or drinking, posting about drama all the time, making threats towards other people. Using facebook in that way is very wrong, and disrespectful. It shouldn't be used in that way at all it'll back fire on you in the future.

    1. I agree, but I don't believe it's wrong of an employer to search through someones Facebook just to get kind of a gist of what the person is like.

    2. I agree with Nancy, I also don't think it's bad to search through someones social media to find out who the real person is.

    3. I agree with nancy and ally, there is nothing wrong with looking at someone's Facebook to see what they are really like you don't want someone doing drugs and working at your place.

    4. I agree you should always watch what you post because you never know who is going to look at in the future.

    5. If I would see any of that on someones Facebook, then it looks like someone getting a promotion.

    6. I agree, promoting yourself as someone who does dangerous and bad things is terrible for future jobs

  5. No I don't think that using Facebook for this is wrong. This way you can truly find out who your applicants are. Your applicant may volunteer at a senior center or maybe he/she might have a criminal record. Either way those things are good to know and may effect the job interview. Even if I saw one of my applicants was swearing a lot on social media, that would even be a game changer. The ice cream shop is a family restaurant and it needs good, well rounded people. Having bad behaviors on social media can lead to loss of job opportunities.

    1. I agree. Having bad behaviors where everyone else can see is bad for their reputation but if you didn't know and hired them it could give your buisness a bad reputation as well.

    2. I agree because not everyone is going to be bad on social media and you need to know who the people are you are hiring because you don't want anyone steeling anything of yours on the job. You need to be able to trust your workers and trust that they will be able to make the right decision and you can do that by starting by looking at their facebook.

  6. NO! If you are looking to get a job anywhere, especially a high paying one! delete your social media accounts, all of them, because those accounts could be from when you posted something really inappropriate and humiliating. This could REALLY hurt your chances for getting a job. Especially one that involves anything on the internet. So like 1.2 million jobs out there require the internet. So 1 post could destroy 1.2 million job opportunities for you.

    1. I'm just wondering, where did you get the number 1.2 million?

    2. I dont agree with deleting them completely. if you absolutely felt the need i'd just go and delete certain things but in the long run you should probably think about what you post before you post it.

      Delete
    3. I also disagree not that its anything bad but you can keep them just so you don't post something that can cause harm to that certain job option.

      Delete
    4. I agree, but just because you delete your account on Facebook or whatever, doesn't mean that they still can't see things you have done in the past.

  7. As a manager I would look for things like vulgar language, association with drugs, and how they interact with other people. The most crucial part i would look for would be interactions with people, if someone can't act civilized over the internet how are they going to react with people in a shop especially if they get frustrated. Which also leads into the language thing, we wouldn't want a worker getting frustrated and cussing a customer out. Association with drugs is also a big one because people usually have a reputation when they are associated with drugs and i wouldn't want anyone with a bad reputation working at the shop and giving it a bad reputation.

    1. Adding to that I think using social media isn't a bad thing but you'll never know whats going to pop up from years ago.

    2. yes i absolutely agree i would look for the same things. i do not want to hire people who would have a bad reputation on the internet

      Delete
    3. Attitude is a really good thing to look for, i agree 100%

      Delete
    4. attitude is everything yes. I wouldn't want to hire someone who is easily frustrated and take it out on a customer or staff member

  8. You could find out that he/she is a hard partier and you don't want someone who is up all night not getting enough sleep and drinking. They could not show up to work or come to work drunk or not feeling well. You could also find out that he/she doesn't get along with people well, and posts rude things about their fellow employees. You don't want to hire someone who starts drama. There is nothing wrong with using Facebook to see what people are really like, so then you can hire the right person for the job. I guess it could also be a bad thing because the pictures could be out of context. That's why people should think before they post things on Facebook.

    1. I agree, a lot of people don't realize but when you post something on the internet, theres no going back and deleting it, its out there forever for anyone to look at.

      Delete
    2. Good point. I feel that a lot of people don't take into consideration the consequences that could pop up in the future from what they've posted in the past. It could really harm their chances at getting hired if they're, for example, hard partiers and post about it.

  9. A background check on your future applicants is smart because you would want to know if the teenager your hiring is responsible enough for the job, who he or she associates with that could potentially harm your business so you would for sure want to avoid that also. You can see if they are sharing inappropriate photos publicly. Others would think it would be "stalking" but if it's used for business purposes then there is nothing wrong with that.

    1. I agree, looking on his or her profile is a good thing if people wouldn't use it for all the wrong reasons, they wouldn't have to check on your online profile.

      Delete
    2. It's not totally stalking if the profile is public. It's easy to access and it's right in the open. I agree, there's nothing wrong with a background check using a profile.

    3. I agree, it's a good idea. You could find out about someone through facebook, whether they have inappropriate comments, or pictures. It's a good idea to look at facebook before you hire them

  10. You could find out a lot about a person from their facebook. You can see if the person you are hiring is ready for the job that you need them to do. If they are always fighting with other people on facebook or being immature then I would not hire them for the job.

    1. I agree you want to know if that person would be employee material and someone who will take responsibilities especially if you are paying them so it would be fair.

    2. I agree. People who pick fights with others online all the time aren't exactly workplace material. You don't want someone who is always fighting to pick fights with customers.

  11. I don't think using Facebook in this way is wrong. If you have things on your Facebook that you don't want your boss or future boss to see then you probably should not have post them in the first place.

  12. I think its fine to use Facebook to hire or fire somebody. They can't say certain things but I would get sent to the office if I would list them. If what they are posting is manly enough, it would make me want to hire them even more.

  13. I don't see the big deal in using Facebook to find out more about a future employer. It's not going against any guidelines - Facebook is public. I wouldn't hire them if they posted things that shouldn't be posted to the public, or they're immature and not thinking before they post.

  15. I don't see anything wrong with hiring someone on facebook for something they ust have to prove that they can actually do the job right but there are many people that apply for a job and they don't even get feedback from them and thats just my opinion on how i think this would work.

    1. I agree, people should actually refer to Facebook first to get some kind of intel on how the person is, you can tell a lot about a person by looking at their Facebook profile, or any social media account for that matter.

  16. I would be looking into see if there was any drug use involved with the student I'm looking to hire, things such as swearing, immaturity, if they're a bully. I think it is a good idea and you can find out a lot about someone and their personality.

  19. I believe looking on a Facebook profile for information is fair, especially if it's public. You're choosing to exploit that information and if it works against you, maybe you should try to either stay more private or avoid doing harmful things. I'd personally look for if they advertised themselves as partiers often by posting photos, or seeing if they post any incriminating statuses.
