Humans Need Not Apply
After watching the attached video, think about the effects of technology on our society, and specifically about how it affects the jobs that will be available in the future.
This isn't just about robots replacing people. This is also about the fact that, when that happens, it will eliminate the "smaller" or "fall back" jobs that are available to people.
It will also create more jobs, because people will be needed to program or write the code for the systems that will do the more menial jobs, the service jobs - the lifting.
What effect will this have on your schooling and/or your career path? If you've been putting thought into what you're going to DO with your life - how does this change that idea?
Geeky question: How is this society and economy of the future demonstrated in Star Trek?
Humans Need Not Apply
This is some commentary by a guy who supports the ideas behind "Humans Need Not Apply". It's just for some additional info...
In Response to Humans Need Not Apply - "The whole idea of having to work for money, in order to live, will have to be thrown out of the window."
This will effect the schooling and work future of our generation in many ways. Say if robots start taking all of the jobs that aren't engineering the robots, they'll be a decline in the need for jobs, kids in school may not take their grades as seriously because overall robots will do their jobs anyway so they wouldn't see a point in getting into a good college. I've put quite a bit of thought into what I want to do in the future, I want to work in the Human Service department and help teens with mental illness and suicidal tendencies, even maybe go to college while i'm working and be able to help create new medications some day. That is a field that robots could easily do better, well, maybe not the working with teens in a Crisis Inpatient Unit but in finding and testing new medications. Robots could easily test and create new medications a million times faster than us humans plus when a robot is just a giant computer they would know what chemical compounds didn't work well with others and eliminate a lot of combinations that would fail before "wasting" the money to try them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement about kids not taking their schooling seriously. Even now with the limited robot jobs, kids have the mindset that in the future robots will just do everything for them anyway, causing them to get lazier and their grades to slip.
DeleteI agree, it is effecting students education.
DeleteThis changes a lot on different jobs espeacially the jobs where you need to use computers those will be gone because the computers will just do that. The jobs that need you to dig a hole and such manual labor will still be there because computers will not be able to do that effectively at all so the price in those jobs will go up and the jobs now that cost little will go up in price a lot.
ReplyDeleteI agree, not all human jobs will be taken over by the bots.
DeleteI agree that all jobs won't be taken over but the wide majority probably will be.
DeleteI Agree also, more jobs involving computers will be taken and not a lot of people will have jobs in that area. But yet again there will still be jobs for people out there
DeleteI agree. There are only a few jobs that'll be taken over, but I'm sure there will be a few that they won't be taking over.
DeleteThis idea can make human work less of a struggle, make things more efficient, and faster. Will this take some of our jobs away? Yes, it will but at the same time it will provide more because people will get hired to work with the bots. If this topic comes sooner than we're all expecting this could affect my generation's schooling and future. For example, if you've already been going to college for four years and you're ready to graduate and move onto your dream career and all of the sudden you're job gets taken by a robot. If this was me I'd not only be very upset but I just wasted four years and a ton of money going into that field and it gets taken. In my opinion robots can affect schooling.
ReplyDeleteI agree you get a job because of your knowledge and you spent a couple of years of schooling and money just for you job to get taken by a robot I would be very upset if the robots start taking jobs I at least think colleges should be cheaper than they are now because people dont want to waste money on schooling for you to not get a job we work way to hard for that.
DeleteI agree, it would also put you into a ton of debt and then you wouldn't be able to pay it off since your now out of a career. I think it's going to be completely different from how it is now in the world, but making robots to take human jobs, sooner or later the way social media predicts what the future will be like, everything will be controlled by robots, and humans wont have to contribute anything to the world anymore.
DeleteYes that would be bad going to school for 4 years and have the job taken by a robot but you wouldn't have to do anything because the robots would be doing everything and that would be great.
DeleteI agree you shouldn't have to suffer debt even more due to technology when you need the money for that job to support yourself and make a living.
DeleteI agree this new technology is going to make human life easier and less stressful, but alway would be very upset it all of sudden after spending all of money on schooling so i could have my dream job. My dream ob was taken by a robot I would be very upset.
DeleteI agree, if a robot took my job that i went to college for and spent a few years in school for it, i would be pretty upset.
DeleteJobs that require humans to be precise and to do the same thing over and over again, are better to be replaced with computers. You tell a computer to do something 100 times, chances are its going to be more consistent that a human doing something 1000 times, Plus it will be much faster. Some computers though however don't have the senses we do, like when we sense something is wrong, or something is not setup right. Like for example, the CNC in our shop, cant detect where the board ends, it has to rely on us to provide it with that information so it doesn't ruin the workpiece. I think computers will drastically affect jobs when we leave for college, because all the fallback jobs, will be taken by robots instead of humans.

DeleteI agree that the jobs being done by the bots will be faster and more efficient than humans doing it.
Deleteyes i agree Gavin, bots will defiantly make a difference in helping with us, but also they might not detect some of the stuff that we can detect.
DeleteI agree these computers will be without less problems but they cannot think like use we programed them they pretty much do as we told them to but we never taught them everything we know so computers will work to a degree.
Deleteyeah i agree the technology will be doing most of the work and not the humans
DeleteI agree bots will make a difference but if they replace a bunch of social jobs eventually no one will talk to other humans because we won't need to. So this might lead to more severe depression due to isolation even if that time is far away.
DeleteI agree with you Gavin it will be easier and less time consuming with robots handling jobs
DeleteI agree Gavin, it will be way more efficient than if humans were to do all the work in daily life, also a lot cheaper in some aspects, the power bill of the company might be insane, but, not paying employees hourly wages makes up for it, so they will have extra money that was used to pay employees to use to buy other things, or pay for the monthly power bill
DeleteI can't wait for that day to come. All I will do after that is just sit there being paid by the government and robots will do everything for me. The only thing I will have to do then, is build a underground bunker with food and a big gun stash just in case it turns out like the movie terminator.
ReplyDeleteYes this would take away jobs from us but in the long run these machines would make it a lot easier to get products faster and to make them more efficient. These machines would change so many lives in so many different ways.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree, the medicines would be a lot better.
Deleteyes i agree the machines would be a big impact on our labor.
DeleteI agree. Medicine could get a lot more advanced with robots in the medical field, and it could help people a lot more efficiently, along with medicine being produced more rapidly if robots were producing it.
Deletewhile this could make life easier, who is going to be able to afford these products if we have no jobs to make money.
Deletetrue the bots would take away a lot of jobs for us and yes it will make it way easier but it will take away a lot of important jobs that important smart people are in charge of and those people will soon not have anything to do and lets say the bots mess up on something huge and it costs to much money to even make those things let alone fix the mistakes they make
ReplyDeleteI don't think of the robots taking our jobs is all that bad its just some people are not going to meet the right kind of jobs they have been looking for and they might not be able to have a job because the robots have taken over the economy.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the target spot for robots in the work industry is jobs that require precision and efficiency. These are mostly manufacturing jobs where parts have tight tolerances and there is very little room for error.
DeleteFirst it'll be like the robots are doing great, they will need humans to process the robots and humans will still have a reason to get up and go to work in the morning, but what will happen when the robots starting making and programming themselves along with other robots that make their own robots for operating everythig in daily life, what will humans be useful for then? I guess only time will tell but I think that the world is getting way to technological, way to quick.
ReplyDeleteI agree how can we really know if later we will have a job that we can count on. I feel like we will never really get to know if are jobs are here to stay or if one day we will just be replaced by a robot.
DeleteI think robots taking are jobs is a big deal, it is good and bad. It will be easier and cheaper if robots did stuff for us but in the long run having robots do are work would take jobs away from people who need it. It would also make people a lot lazier .
ReplyDeleteI agree, we are already starting to become a lot more lazier than our grandparents were back in the day, who knows how lazy we'll get when robots completely take over
DeletePeople are already becoming really lazy, but once the robots take over there will be no jobs or money, everyone would become alot lazier once the robots take over the jobs.
DeleteWell first off, there wouldn't be many jobs out there for us once the robots start doing the same jobs we do, there would be less of an opportunity to get a good job. But once the robots do more the humans would get paid alot less, and soon enough there will be no jobs left, and houses, food, and other necessities would be alot cheaper.
ReplyDeleteI agree the robots will be taking the jobs that most people need to make money.
DeleteI agree. If robots take over jobs and people can't find jobs, the economy could change greatly.
DeleteYeah, society will change for sure. Unemployment rates will rise drastically.
DeleteI agree if robots start taking over our jobs then we will be losing all job opportunities.
DeleteIt will affect future jobs if you are going into a specific career that can be replaced by robots. Yes robots will indeed help us but unemployment rates will go up but more supplies will be in demand and people will expect better outcome of getting supplies out faster for people to buy so they are a good thing but to an extent where they are needed for only certain things.
ReplyDeleteI feel like this will change schooling and career paths greatly. Not only has technology been advancing rapidly, but it's doing so in ways that are taking over jobs. With robots having capabilities to do our jobs for us, it's creating fewer jobs for people. It's true that people could go into, say engineering, to program these robots, but those jobs aren't for everyone. With robots advancing, there will be fewer jobs for people who really need a steady income that their jobs provided before it got taken over by robots.
ReplyDeleteYeah, even though we think inventing more robots is a good thing, we'll be destroying our own lives.
DeleteYes this is true it would be destroying are lives in the long run
DeleteI agree that more schooling would be geared towards programming and other jobs that will happen because of the industry that will spring out due to automation. Maybe more jobs will be created and it will be a great thing, or maybe it will cause unemployment to spike and we will see the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, along with the disappearance of the middle class.
DeleteI also agree that it will change the paths greatly because it will take over everything leaving there nothing for humans.
DeleteI agree how can we know if in time to come the only jobs left for humans are the ones to create all this robots. I know that would be the job for me and fell many people would agree. Not everyone is going to just want to sit around and make robots for the rest of there lives.
ReplyDeleteWhile it seems like robots will end up taking over all of our jobs, it's easy to say that the working population will also be well against it. It's hard to do something so drastic without having to fight the public, so I see it happening but not easily. There will be people needed to keep maintenance or code the robots, so not all hope is lost. It seems to me that it's most logical to go into a type of technological science to secure a future, but obviously not everyone wants to do that. Schooling will be changed, and I see a lot of resistance from the majority of the population.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree
DeleteThere soon won't be any jobs but maybe just engineering which is not for everyone. A lot of people won't want to, and there'll only be a small amount of jobs which are going to be hard to get because the lack in jobs. There will be a lot of poverty because only a small percentage of the population will be working due to lack in jobs. People won't be able to afford things such as houses, healthcare, and just everyday items. The "robot company's" will lose money because no one will be able to afford them. Thats what I think will happen over many years.
ReplyDeleteI think that technology will play a huge part of how how are future will play out. I def think that robots will replace a lot of manufacturing jobs which will def hurt the american economy. There has been a lot of talk in europe about a living age, where the government will play people a minimun wage just for living, I hope that it does not come to this because it will hurt more people than it helps. while tech can be a good thing we have to be cautious on the lives it will effect.
ReplyDeleteI believe technology will greatly change schooling and careers. If there is more technology in the future there isn't going to be much for people anymore. People will lose money and business's will run out of money and not be able to afford the robots to do the work for them.
